Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated on various dates in Canada, the United States, some Caribbean islands, and Liberia. It’s a day on giving thanks of the blessings of the harvest and the preceding year. It’s an annual national holiday marked by religious observances and a traditional meal including turkey. The holiday commemorates a harvest festival celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621, and is held in the US on the fourth Thursday in November. A similar holiday is held in Canada, usually on the second Monday in October. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the United States, and Thanksgiving 2018 occurs on Thursday, November 22.
